the latest release on francis harris scissor & thread label out of brooklyn is another exercise in deep and meditative atmospheres. the label, comprised of a tight knit collective of multi-faceted composers, vocalists and instrumentalists, always strives to develop new projects based on a shared aesthetic, and this five track ep is both boundary pushing and fully synchronized with the labels approach. with melquiades blue caves melbourne based composer and sound designer alexander albrecht presents his solo debut ep following on from the tidal river album he released as part of the albrecht la�brooy duo. the title track blue caves is a skittering, weightless exploration of space, seemingly built around lush field recordings and fragments of melody developing out of the ether. avlemonas flows from a similar source, but crystallizes around an off kilter rhythm and occasional subby bass, balanced against swooping pads and piano motifs. morning breeze seems to revel in the evocative nature of its title, with hand played percussion backing more wistful, emotive piano sketches and wandering bass notes, before the track settles into a hypnotic groove. label head francis harris provides another take on the track for his re-form version, a more dancefloor aimed excursion that draws deeply from the classic deep house of the new york and detroit masters. ending the relases is patio, which drifts back towards the ambient territories of the opening tracks, with exquisite, understated instrumentation and a melancholic yet elated vibe.

four tracks of ny-flavoured boogie and house goodness - quality is the key word from copenhagen based music for dreams and here is another home run. willie graff splits his year between dj residencies in new york and ibiza. in this new outing with studio partner darren eboli, the influence is, as the title suggests, clearly ny-based. over only four tracks, the pair manage to craft a stunningly comprehensive exploration of the essential elements of dance music. opening track -love flight- staggers into a lush string-driven groove that recalls the glory of metro area meets wally badarou vibes. minimal yet playful, it lounges somewhere in the depths of the house tradition, calling on familiar sounds while throwing in odd details along the way (harmonicas?). it takes both skill, devotion and a sense of humor to pull this track off, making for a strong opening. -moon tan- lingers on a metallic hook that drags you into a plethora of percussion followed by a rubbery soft baseline. dubby key work would suggest this was a new wave band jamming at compass point, while the icy chill of the xylophone transports you into 80s italo territory. -second sun- pulls out the bag of boogie tricks, relying on a firm but humble baseline and smattering drum machine claps. nile rodgers-style guitar licks guide us onwards into a well-orchestrated jam that builds up and breaks down with perfect timing while dreamy chords reach for the sky. -first light- keeps the groove tight while dipping over towards more balearic temperatures. steeped in a watery atmosphere and gentle organic percussion, it focuses in on a trance-inducing arpeggio that lulls you in to the swaying badarou-style synth swirls that intercept it.

being closely connected to the label, it was only a matter of time before daniele cosmo was released on pinkman. at long last, he makes his debut appearance with co-conspirator cco as savage grounds. what they came up with is a tight two tracker presenting full speed, minimalistic punk electro workouts. both tracks, while boasting with furiosity and dread, as is often the case in the broken dreams releases, carry an infectious groove that is guaranteed to get bodies moving in the highest gear and right into the abyss. pressed on a single 7- this concise release is far from falling short in completeness, expertise and potential to break dreams.

slam city jams are back with their first compilation. a 4-tracker packed up with five amazing artists from all over the globe. and lets face it: its a breaky affair! starting off with our munich homeboys from coeo. known for their funked up house tunes on toy tonics, they start into complete new realms this time. �never going home� is the perfect example of a dope broken beat electro tune, that with its weird synth line & smooth breakdown never failed on a gig in the last months. on a2 the man doppelate from london (lets go swimming rec.) exactly hits the spot with mezmerizing synths, tight drum programming and a crunchy acid bassline on �four feet up the stairs�. the flip side starts off with label head honchos rhode & brown, who teamed up with their buddy leo woelfel from austria, both known for releases on toy tonics, public possession or lets play house. here the name �more drama (less hysteria) says it all: pure drama on this breaky acid tune! to round up this great package weve got marco lazovic from moscow on b2. he digs deep �in the jungle with rolling 707 drums, dreamy synths and this tropical atmosphere we cant get enough of.

a little over six years ago, let s play house because, in earnest, with a 12-inch called indoor pool. fittingly, the track it revolved around was by runaway, the duo comprised of marcos cabral and jacques renault, and featured remixes by some tight friends of the imprint, beautiful swimmers, slow hands, and soft rocks. we thought it d be fun to celebrate our birthday for once, but not with something too obvious (e.g. a compilation) or too involved (e.g. a warehouse party blowout). what we came up with is this, a 10-inch that reflects a little of the past into the present. appropriately, it includes edits by two of the artists on that debut ep. runaway s is a dusted-off and remixed secret weapon from the act s early days while soft rock s is classic soft rocks, albeit from a more current vintage (it was recorded this year). both absolutely rock. a little twisted, a little tilted, a little tipsy, but, as always, tight and tidy. funny how, since 2009, everything has changed and nothing has changed at all for this label of ours.

r&s founder renaat vandepapeliere launches a new series rv trax, to reflect the sound of his dj sets. re-invigorated and inspired by contemporary dance floor sounds, after 30+ years as the label owner and figurehead renaat succumbed to the temptation to finally, at the tender age of 60, try his own hand at rocking the crowd. renaat s sets have seen him assemble a treasure trove of unreleased music that will now find a very personal home on rv trax. emblazoned with the belgian national colours of black, yellow and red these tracks proudly flaunt their floor-filling dynamics. the first, a dance floor stormer from steve legget, remixing fellow north easterners bird of paradises original a tight punchy workout that pairs distorted 909 kicks against a high tension string part and melancholic synth pads. g-prod (aka french brothers david and nicolas gaugain) provide a balmy, motor-city style number shuffling drums underpin sunrise synth washes and euphoric melodies. buenos ayres hermetics provide a frostier mood with collider - chilly fm bells pinned against serrated percussion and swirling distortion

one of the funkiest albums ever from gilberto gil � a set that beautifully mixes rootsy elements with tighter funk arrangements � in a style that�s not unlike some of the 70s samba soul experiments from jorge ben! the record borrows heavily from american funk and soul of the time, and takes gil�s tight songwriting and infuses it with an even catchier edge than ever before � really creating a fantastic groove that seems to illuminate gilberto�s lyrics even more than before � with a sense of personality and joy that really comes through, even beyond the barriers of language! the whole thing s wonderful � tight, but never overproduced � and very individual, despite an influence from american soul music. titles include -rafavela-, -aqui e agora-, -ile aye-, -baba alapala-, -era nova-, -samba do aviao-, and -balafon-.

on the a-side label head relative delivers to you -i can t get it-, tight 4/4 stomping raw drums mixed with hypnotic pads and old school vocoder, next track is a -ghetto- 2-step juicy remix by blatta. a3 is a classic deep lo-fi punch house by the napoli based s-dm. b-side welcomes back tengrams and its analogue toys, -another day- is a balanced 808 running pattern song that leaves your mind dreaming. b2 is the newcomer will hofbauer with its moody melodies, easy rhythms and heavy choruses. last track is thunderdub from amazing analog adventures, pure italian gem between used machines and vocal cuts on 110 bpm. first 100 copies comes with original instax polaroid!

already a regular studio collaborator with richy ahmed, michael jansons aka jansons strikes it solo on the fourth release for richy�s flourishing four thirty two label. the �mode� ep finds jansons following up from recent chart topping original releases and remixes for knee deep in sound, lower east and his �panic at the disco� single on leftroom, which is their best selling single on beatport to date. it�s a bumper 4 track ep, showcasing and encapsulating the many shades of jansons unique sound, and bolstered with a remix from aforementioned collaborator and label boss, richy ahmed. the original mix of �mode� comes correct with plenty of classic house music chops, frenetic synth keys jab away over a rubbery, percussive groove for a sophisticated and energizing club cut, whilst ahmed plumps for a real old skool flavor on his remix. chugging drums and a tight bassline give more than a whiff of classic windy city house vibes on this killer remix. two versions of �colours� are packed with hypnotizing string riffs and bumpin� percussion, with the �alternative mix� edging it in the more stripped down techno stakes, whilst �sequential� find jansons in disco mood, with rolling drums, string stabs and a deadly bottom end groove that wraps up a fine release from this burgeoning british talent

having already earned his balearic stripes some time ago, as one of the resident djs at we love. at space in ibiza, ian blevins has since relocated to berlin, and has been immersing himself in the esoteric vibes of the city. on the strength of his latest ep on futureboogie, this is clearly a good thing, as the round trip ep is laden with the deep magical vibes that have also shaped his recent releases on labels like banoffe pies, not an animal records, blind jacks journey and esp institute. on round trip, an abundance of driving, arpeggiated synthesizers weave around sparse yet sturdy drumbeats, as thick pads rise and fall in dramatic fashion. panthera krause (permanent vacation/riotvan/lobster theremin) is on board for the remix of round trip, re-shaping the original into a merry, space organ led, tribal dance, with a splash of garage house vibes that soon become immersed in its own synth heaven, its a cracking remix from the leipzig based producer. on rolands rat, blevins keeps things tight with soaring strings, organ stabs a strolling bassline for a quality jam, whilst can you count my dream? is a dense, and cinematic slab of transcendental dance, an almost claustrophobic atmosphere only intensifies the drama and delivers the heat that seals this superb ep from blevins.

native new yorker son of sound aka henry maldonado returns to delusions of grandeur with another fine ep including two floor-friendly originals plus a stripped back remix from aroop roy. for those too young to have been buying records in the early 90�s henry was a key figure, involved in seminal releases on strictly rhythm as house 2 house, maxi records as deja vu and maw records as rhythm section. to say this guy has history is something of an understatement having made an important contribution to the first wave of deep house with productions dating right back to �91. more recently he has created magic for jus ed�s underground quality, classic, razor n tape and local talk as well as establishing his own district30 imprint.

following the hypnotic �what�s in your head� ep in 2016, archie hamilton returns to moscow records with his first solo ep on the imprint since the release last year. since finishing 2016 with a place in ra s top 100 djs poll, he�s been touring the world, had a summer residency at amnesia and released another massive ep on fuse. an integral part of the stellar ascent of the brand, and founder at tastemaker label initiatives moscow records, moss co. and arkityp, he is an artist very much in control of his rise. the record opens with confusion, an out and out anthem which has been tearing up dance floors across the globe all summer. a trademark bassline drives the track forward as stabs build, tight percussion cuts through and a repeating vocal enters. then when the track drops it shifts the mood completely, causing any dance floor to bump uncontrollably. dos equis is something different altogether. minimalistic percussion and a tight sub lay the foundations for a funky bass guitar line. warming pads meet rhodes keys and out of nowhere a beautifully subtle vocal line appears. as the track breaks down, a mind bending synth line takes the listener out of their state of reflection. the title track on the flip is a classic piece of groovy hamilton weaponry. a positive mood that bounces along to a whispering voice in the background. the track develops as lush chords permeate the groove, soaking the dance floor in the last of the summer sun to create a euphoric crescendo.
